Presence Is the Luxury
Why Small Wins Matter More Than We Think
When you are building a business - on another continent, navigating different cultures and multiple government regulations - there are countless days spent grinding. Moving forward incrementally. Quietly. Relentlessly.
For a long time, I didn’t think much about celebrating small wins. Quite frankly, until recently, I was solely focused on accomplishing Big goals - Huge milestones.
Head down. Eyes forward. Always moving. In the trenches.
Only recently did I realize how much of my life had been lived that way - always pushing toward the next milestone, without pausing to look back at how far I’d come or how much I’d grown since the last one.
As a New Yorker, especially in the business world, pushing oneself to the point of absolute exhaustion has almost been worn as a badge of honor.
But something changed. Something broke.
And in that breaking, I discovered something unexpected.
Presence is the luxury. Not the proof of success that arrives only after working oneself into exhaustion - but the ability to actually be present along the way.
At first glance, presence and ambition can feel like divergent ideas. But I’ve come to understand that they move hand in hand.
The Quiet Power of Not Rushing Past Your Life.
Each day now - because I rise quite early - I’ve begun to consciously celebrate small wins throughout the day.
Sometimes it’s spending time at the gym.
Sometimes it’s completing a task that aligns deeply with the ultimate goal I’m working toward.
Sometimes it’s simply the awareness that I am, in fact, moving closer to where I want to be.
That awareness alone brings a quiet power.
It allows me to be here - to actually inhabit the moment instead of racing past it.
Celebrating small wins doesn’t shout the way a major milestone does. There’s no applause. No announcement. It’s more like soft taps - steady and intentional - bringing me closer and closer to the bullseye.
I’m choosing to stay present instead of rushing ahead. I’m finishing small things and allowing myself to feel proud - without immediately calculating how to get to the finish line faster.
The truth is this…. Life is the accumulation of small moments.
And only now am I fully realizing that life happens there.
Life doesn’t happen only at the finish line.
It happens in the email you finally sent.
In the conversation you handled with grace.
In the day that felt calm instead of chaotic.
In choosing rest instead of pushing yourself to the brink…. Those are not insignificant things.
Especially now - during a business cycle where global uncertainty can shift by the hour, where geopolitics can tip in either direction, and where building a company across multiple fronts requires constant vigilance - it can be deeply stressful.
And yet, in acknowledging the quiet power of presence, something stabilizes.
Every meaningful life is built brick by brick.
Small wins compound.
They create confidence.
They build trust with yourself.
They form the emotional infrastructure that allows you to dream bigger and stand taller.
The Shift That Changes Everything
What I’m learning is this: when I pause to acknowledge progress, something shifts within me.
I move from pressure to gratitude.
From urgency to intention.
From survival to stewardship.
For so much of my life, and as someone who traveled relentlessly - being busy, exhausted, and constantly “on” was celebrated. Living in survival mode was worn like a badge of honor.
Now, for example, instead of taking multiple flights, I would much rather choose the drive.
I’ve redefined what celebration means.
Real living isn’t excess.
It’s recognition.
It’s honoring effort.
Consistency.
Faithfulness.
Fulfillment.
It’s understanding that joy doesn’t need permission - and it doesn’t need to wait.
A Moment of Clarity
And to be clear, it’s not as though no one has ever shared this with me before. It’s not as if I haven’t seen it echoed across countless headlines, talk shows, or podcasts. It’s not that I haven’t heard it from people I admire deeply, or from those closest to me.
I have. It just hadn’t clicked - until now.
And if you’re anything like me, I invite you to take a gentle look at the way you’re experiencing your life. Not through the lens of achievement or output, but through the texture of your days.
Because from what I’m experiencing, there is so much more available to us than we realize.
When we slow down just enough to notice, the bouquet of life becomes sweeter - richer, fuller, more nuanced. Presence sharpens the senses. It deepens gratitude. It allows us to receive what we’ve already worked so hard to build.
And in that receiving, something beautiful opens.
In Closing… A Gentle Reminder
So if today didn’t look extraordinary on paper, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t meaningful.
YOU showed up with integrity.
YOU moved with intention.
And by living this way, You’ve protected your peace at all costs.
So you’ve already won something worth celebrating…. your peace…. because…
Presence IS the luxury.
And every small win is proof that something beautiful is unfolding.
Wishing you a wonderful end to the week.
With Sincere Gratitude,
Layla-Joy
