Integrity vs. Opportunity:
When Business and Values Collide
I want to share a story about an unexpected event - one that caught me off guard and made me rethink my approach to business. It was something I hadn’t anticipated, but it served as a powerful reminder of how important it is to stay adaptable and take time for self-reflection in today’s ever-changing business landscape.
The Golden Age of Aspirational Advertising
Growing up in the 1980s, I was enchanted by the world of advertising. It painted a picture of beauty, sensuality, and elegance that felt almost magical. I can still recall the Caress commercials, with their soft lighting, sparkles, and a sense of romance. These ads didn’t just sell products; they sold dreams—the promise of love, allure, and a lifestyle we all aspired to.
Fashion brands were masters of this craft. Iconic Calvin Klein campaigns with Brooke Shields and the glamorous Chanel No. 5 ads featuring Catherine Deneuve didn’t just promote jeans or perfume; they sold an image of sophistication and desire. Even everyday products were elevated—who could forget Pantene’s unforgettable tagline, “Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful”? Back then, every commercial felt like an invitation to indulge in something extraordinary.
From Aspiration to Provocation
Today, as I work to expand IYLIA’s reach, I find myself navigating a very different landscape. The current marketing world often relies on controversy, shock value, and outrage to capture attention. It’s a far cry from the aspirational storytelling I remember. For a brand like IYLIA, rooted in luxury, craftsmanship, and a conscious approach, this shift presents a unique challenge. As a woman-led business, there’s an added layer of scrutiny; people tend to hold us to a higher standard, expecting more than they might from a large, corporation. It can feel like walking a tightrope, where every decision must be made with precision and care.
One of my biggest challenges is finding ways to grow the brand while staying true to its core values and without alienating our audience. Growth is essential, and with that growth comes the opportunity to invest back into the community, create positive impact, and empower others.
When Values and Business Collide
Recently, I encountered a situation that made me question my own approach. One of my closest friends, whom I’ve known since I was 16, is an inspiring and talented business person. He’s the kind of individual who uplifts everyone around him, making them feel smarter and more valued—a rare find. He has always been a beacon of integrity to me.
However, while scrolling through social media recently, I noticed him collaborating with someone I have serious reservations about. This individual is connected to a community that, in my view, has caused significant harm for personal gain. The continuous stream of photos and posts promoting their partnership was jarring—I felt shock, disappointment, and even a sense of betrayal. My friend wasn’t just working with this controversial figure; he was actively celebrating it in multiple Instagram stories and posts. While I could see how this collaboration might bring him increased visibility and new business prospects, I couldn’t understand why he would choose to align himself with someone like this.
I kept asking myself: How could he publicly celebrate this relationship, knowing the damage his new client has caused? It made me question everything I thought I knew about him. Had he changed? Was the allure of financial gain enough to shift his values?
I voiced my concerns to a couple of close confidants, expecting them to share my unease. Instead, their response caught me off guard: “It’s just business.” I was stunned. Was I being too rigid in my thinking? Was I letting my personal judgments limit potential business opportunities? It was a moment of deep reflection that forced me to re-evaluate where I draw the line between personal values and business strategy.
Expanding My Perspective
That all happened about two weeks ago, and since then, it’s been an endless stream of photos. He’s going out of his way to showcase his new client to the world, which has led me to some serious self-reflection. I started to wonder if I’ve been unintentionally limiting IYLIA’s growth by letting my personal values dictate where and how we market the brand. Perhaps I need to be more open to exploring unfamiliar avenues. Of course, there are boundaries I’m not willing to compromise on, but the world is changing - people’s perceptions are shifting, and what was once unacceptable is now embraced. I’m beginning to realize that there might be space to expand while staying true to our mission, even if it means stepping into uncharted territory.
Finding the Balance
Ultimately, this experience has taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of flexibility and openness. Growth often requires us to step outside our comfort zones and adapt, while still staying true to our core values. IYLIA is not just a business; it’s a platform for positive change and empowerment. I’m committed to thoughtfully exploring new opportunities for expansion, even if it means challenging some of my previous assumptions.
I believe there’s a way forward that balances integrity with growth. It’s a journey driven by the belief that we can honor our values while also embracing new possibilities. I’m eager to see where this path leads and excited about the potential it holds for our future.
That’s all for now. Wishing you a lovely (and restful) weekend - I think we could all use it!
Bye for now!
x,
Layla-Joy
